Hey everyone,

I had been meaning to post something about a recent trip to Belize that I went on with my dad and brother. In short, it was amazing. We stayed at a place called ACES (American Crocodile Education Sanctuary), who relocate or keep problematic crocodiles which would normally have been shot by the Belize Forest Department. The work done by owners Vince and Cherie to educate and inform people about these creatures has been tremendous.

Unfortunately, yesterday I received word that ACES had been burned to the ground and that several of their captive crocodiles had been shot and killed by a group of locals. The cause of all this was suspicion that 2 local missing kids were fed to these crocs by the owners (who weren't even there at the time - they were removing problematic crocodiles in the northern part of the country). Attached is a link to their website and a couple more links to news elsewhere. I expect a larger story either tonight or tomorrow.

Just wanted to spread the news.
26 August 2010

TAXONOMIC REVISION OF DESMOGNATHUS WRIGHTI (CAUDATA: PLETHODONTIDAE)

2010. Herpetologica 66(3): 283-295

Erica J. Crespi, Robert A. Browne & Leslie J. Rissler

Abstract: We revise the taxonomic status of Desmognathus wrighti, which occurs in the southern
Appalachians of western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, and southwest Virginia, USA, based on a
combination of genetic, ecological, and morphometric analyses. Previously, we reported fixed differences in
allozymic loci and mitochondrial DNA sequences between lineages geographically divided by the French
Broad River basin at the level of species divergence. Here, we show that these two lineages also differ in
ventral pigmentation and several measures of body size, including snout-vent length, body condition, and
head width. In addition, spatially explicit ecological-niche analyses of climate at more than 400 collection
localities spanning the range of D. wrighti indicate that the lineages separated by the French Broad River are
in unique environmental niche space. Ecological niche models resolved that population localities north of the
river were generally colder and drier than localities to the south, which suggests that divergent selection
pressures may exist, in addition to isolation by distance, to drive the diversification of these two lineages. The
name Desmognathus wrighti (King, 1936), for which the type locality is Mt. LeConte within the Great Smoky
Mountains, Tennessee, was retained for all populations south and west of the French Broad River, while the
name D. organi, with type locality at Whitetop Mountain, Virginia, was given to those populations north and
east of the river.
TIMING OF ORGANOGENESIS SUPPORT BASAL POSITION OF TURTLES IN THE AMNIOTE TREE OF LIFE

2009. BMC Evolutionary Biology 9: 1-9

Ingmar Werneburg & Marcelo R Sánchez-Villagra

Abstract
Background: The phylogenetic position of turtles is the most disputed aspect in the reconstruction of the land vertebrate tree of life. This controversy has arisen after many different kinds and revisions of investigations of molecular and morphological data. Three main hypotheses
of living sister-groups of turtles have resulted from them: all reptiles, crocodiles + birds or squamates + tuatara. Although embryology has played a major role in morphological studies of vertebrate phylogeny, data on developmental timing have never been examined to explore and test
the alternative phylogenetic hypotheses. We conducted a comprehensive study of published and new embryological data comprising 15 turtle and eight tetrapod species belonging to other taxa, integrating for the first time data on the side-necked turtle clade.

Results: The timing of events in organogenesis of diverse character complexes in all body regions is not uniform across amniotes and can be analysed using a parsimony-based method. Changes in the relative timing of particular events diagnose many clades of amniotes and include a phylogenetic signal. A basal position of turtles to the living saurian clades is clearly supported by timing of organogenesis data.

Conclusion: The clear signal of a basal position of turtles provided by heterochronic data implies significant convergence in either molecular, adult morphological or developmental timing characters, as only one of the alternative solutions to the phylogenetic conundrum can be right.
The development of a standard reference series of embryological events in amniotes as presented here should enable future improvements and expansion of sampling and thus the examination of other hypotheses about phylogeny and patterns of the evolution of land vertebrate development.
